I have finally stopped procrastinating (for now) and written down my reading goals for the new year. I've kept it short and sweet, as they are all straight forward and manageable. 1. Reread moreWhile picking out books for a recent post about books I want to reread, I became aware of how few books I've actually reread. This year I want to visit some of the books I remember loving. I want to reread at least three books. It's not a lot, but I want to have a realistic goal. 2. Quality over quantityInstead of focusing on reading as many books as I can, I want to catch up on some of those big and intimidating books on my shelves. It's tempting to stick to shorter books, because, let's be honest, … [Read more...]
The Reading Year in Review: 2017
This previous year has been surprisingly productive for me. I started this blog and I've been actively using it since late April 2017. A feat I never thought possible with my poor track record of maintaining interest in, well, basically anything. I rarely get bored from lack of ideas or entertainment. I get bored with things. Usually very quickly in fact. It's good for generating ideas and thinking outside the box, but not so great for keeping a book blog alive. Don't get me wrong, it hasn't been easy. Some months have been pretty terrible. But that's the thing, isn't it? Nothing worth doing is ever easy. If it was, I'd most likely have abandoned this project long ago. Twenty-seventeen … [Read more...]
End of The Year Book Haul: Part II
This second part of my end of the year book haul contains almost exclusively popular science books. If you're even remotely interested in space and physics, you should look in to a couple of these books. If you haven't already checked it out, the first part of my end of the year book haul can be found if you click right here. Hyperspace by Michio Kaku is as the subtitle says, 'A Scientific Odyssey Through Parallel Universes, Time Warps, and the 10th Dimension'. Truly mind-blowing stuff is discussed here. And on a comprehendible level if you're willing to be open-minded. It works as an introduction to string theory without going into the depth of the obscure mathematics it's based on. I've … [Read more...]
Books I Want to Reread
After reading Aurora's post about which books she wants to revisit, I was inspired to do it myself. So here I am, happily stealing her idea. I have never been much of a rereader, which is a shame. In the never-ending pursuit of finding the perfect story, it's easy to forget about all of the great stories you've already experienced and loved. So I've decided I want to make sure to reread some of the books I know I love, as well as some I remember loving when I was younger, but which I haven't revisited since. What We Talk About When We Talk About Love by Raymond Carver. In high school, we read a couple of the stories from this awesome short story collection. A couple of years ago I read … [Read more...]
End of The Year Book Haul: Part I
The end of the year is near, so to celebrate not buying waaaay too many books these past few months, I bought waaaay too many books! Its great. I love it. The first part of my end of the year book haul contains everything from classic crime novels to sci-fi and fantasy. I'm extremely pleased with all of the books I've acquired this winter. The only problem I face with this stack of books, is where to put them all. I might need to do a culling of my shelves, or perhaps buy another. What a wonderful idea! Double Indemnity by James M. Cain is classic crime noir. It was published in 1943 and adapted for the silver screen the year after. James M. Cain is said to one of the original … [Read more...]
The Month in Review: November 2017
It always comes as a surprise to me when another year is coming to an end. Yet, it's never too late to introduce something new. I therefore present to you, a new monthly wrap-up where I share my favorite books of the month, which movies and tv shows I enjoyed, ect. I might expand it in the future as I come up with more ideas, but for now I'll stick to the basics. The month of November has been weird. It went by so fast, but, at the same time, it felt like an eternity. I've read a bunch of books this month. Honestly, I think it might have been my best reading month of the year. Without further introduction and babbling, let's get on with it: FAVORITE BOOKS OF THE MONTH To be honest, the … [Read more...]
T5W: Books I’m Thankful For
Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly thing hosted by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes. You can find more information about past and upcoming topics in the GoodReads group. This week's topic is books that we're thankful for. It was hard to choose which ones to include, but these are without a doubt books I'm truly thankful for. 5 — Crow: From The Life and Songs of The Crow by Ted HughesIt offered me comfort at a time of grief. I can't quite put my finger on why I feel so deeply for this poetry collection. Perhaps it's the mythical nature of the character of Crow, I honestly can't say. It has a special place in my heart none the less. 4 — The Lonely City: Adventures in the Art of Being Alone by Olivia … [Read more...]
The TBR Book Tag
The TBR book tag was created by Rachel from the A Perfection Called Books way back in 2014. I've been looking for a fun tag to do and I thought this one would be great, so here we are! How do you keep track of your TBR pile? I don't have a specific place for my unread books on my shelves. I've considered dividing them into read and unread, but I've been too lazy to actually take all of my books off of the shelves and organize them. I remember which books I've read, so it's not a problem for me to quickly pick an unread book off of my shelves anyway. I also really like reading on my kindle, so I have some tbr books there as well. Besides the ones that I own, there's my GoodReads tbr. … [Read more...]
The House Cup Reading Challenge: Update #1
We're a little over halfway through the house cup reading challenge, so I thought it was time to do an update of what I've read so far. As I always, I changed my tbr a bit. What a surprise. I'm very much a mood reader, so I'd say it was unavoidable that I'd switch it up instead of following what I planned to read. It has been a very productive readathon for me this far. I've already read 8 books. Most of them are really great, and a couple have even become new favorites. Main Challenges (20p) I've completed five out of seven main challenges, which are the ones that are worth most points. I feel very on top of schedule, even though I mixed up my tbr a bit as I've already … [Read more...]
T5W: Books Featuring Mythical Creatures
Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly thing hosted by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes. You can find more information about past and upcoming topics in the GoodReads group. I'm going to have to cheat a little bit, because I don't have enough books for just one creature. So instead, I'm sharing my top five books featuring mythical creatures in general. Before I bore you too much, let's get into the list. 5 — Storm Front by Jim Butcher The first book in the Dresden Files series is not the best book in the series according to most reviews I've come across. It is, none the less, a good supernatural crime mystery novel, which sets up the characters and the world that's expanded upon in the rest of the series. … [Read more...]
