Today is just going to be a short review, because I'm currently on vacation. But mainly because I don't have much to say about this book, yet I still wanted to share my thoughts. ⭐️⭐️/5 stars. The Alchemists of Loom is a steampunk fantasy novel following the infamous White Wraith, Ariana, her initiate, Florence, and a Dragon called Cvareh. Thrown together by accident, they start to form an unlikely bond that lead them into a world of trouble. The world is super interesting because of all the steampunk elements. Somehow, when I first heard about it, I didn't catch the fact that it was steampunk. And I usually don't enjoy the aesthetics of that genre, but somehow this particular book … [Read more...]
Every Heart A Doorway by Seanan McGuire
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars. We often see books and movies about going to another world, but what happens when the adventure ends? What happens to the characters when they come home? That's what Every Heart a Doorway is about. Spanning only 173 pages, this is a very short book. Yet it manages to say much more than just the words on the pages. It presents a different side of portal fantasy, one that deals with the cruel pain of experiencing a true sense of belonging just to have it ripped away. Stripped of one's significance. Banished to a life of conformity, not knowing when, or even if there is a way back home. Hope hurts. That's what you need to learn, and fast, if you don't want … [Read more...]
Road Trip & Vacation tbr
So far I've read three of the books on my June TBR. The ones I haven't gotten to yet are still on my list, which I hope to finish before the end of the month. This is going to be a short list of books I want to enjoy while on vacation. I am pretty sure I won't be able to get to all of them, but you've got to be optimistic right? I basically just want to read all the books. I'm going on a Road Trip with a friend down the west coast starting in Portland, going all the way down to San Diego and then back to Portland. From there I'm flying to Los Angeles and staying with family for a couple of days before I go to Boston to visit another good friend. I'm so excited I can't wait. Hopefully I'll … [Read more...]
Age of Myth by Michael J. Sullivan
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars. Age of Myth is my first Michael J. Sullivan book and I can honestly say I'm impressed. It's the first book in a six book series set 3000 years before the events of The Riyria Chronicles. The Legends of The First Empire series is meant to work as a separate entry into the world of Elan, and it does not contain spoilers for the other books set in the same world. The Fhrey have ruled the world for eons. They vanquished the Dherg, routed the giants, and chased the goblins into the sea. They have no equal, no fear of any living thing – until now.” Gods are believed to be immortal, but when Raithe, son of Herkimer, crosses the path of one of the Fhrey, things become a bit … [Read more...]
Books I Have Marked As DNF
When I start a book I feel obligated to finish it even though I don't like it. I rarely DNF books, because I'm always like I want to give it a chance. And then when I'm a good chunk into the book, I think if I stop reading and put it aside I'll have wasted my time. But with that said there are three books that I for some reasons just haven't been able to finish. A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Matin Please don't hate me. It's long and intimidating, overly descriptive and there are so many other great series that haven't been adapted to fantastic TV shows. I have tried to read the first book multiple times and have yet to manage it. When the first season concluded I immediately ordered … [Read more...]
Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars. Ink and Bone is an alternate history novel, where The Library of Alexandria has expanded to all corners of the world. The Library controls the flow of knowledge with an iron fist. It's illegal to possess original books and the only way to access literary knowledge is through the Library-issued 'blanks'. These blank books can display books from the Library's vast collection of originals. But it's not the same as handling a real book. The story follows Jess, who comes from a family of book smugglers. He loves books just as much as us readers, but to his family, books are the source of income. There is no sentimentality involved, unlike Jess' relationship with books. … [Read more...]
Addictive Book Series For Escaping Reality
Sometimes you just need to escape real life and lose yourself in a world far from what you know. I've only included series where I've read every single book, because that way I am not lying when I say I was addicted while reading them. These are series I've read back to back because they are simply impossible to put down. Sookie Stackhouse by Charlaine Harris This series is close to my heart because I started reading it right after watching the first season of True Blood in 2008. As you might know or have guessed, True Blood is based on the Sookie Stackhouse series. It's about vampires, romance and big personalities in rural Louisiana. It's deliciously addicting. Penryn and The End of … [Read more...]
My Ambitious June TBR 2017
Sometimes you just want to read all the books at the same time and that's when the overly ambitious TBR comes into play. At the end of June I'm going on a road trip from Portland to San Diego and back again with a friend I haven't seen the last two years. I'm so excited, but I really want to get some reading done before I go. Ink and Bone and Paper and Fire by Rachel Caine I have a feeling this is right up my alley. I don't know much about it, but the series is called The Great Library. Everything involving bookception is bound to be amazing. The third and final book, Ash and Quill, comes out July 11th and it would be awesome to be completely absorbed in the world without waiting too … [Read more...]
Top Five: Favorite Audiobook Narrators
One of my favorite activities is to go for a walk while listening to an audiobook. Hell, I like listening when I clean, empty the dishwasher, do laundry, really just when I'm doing something potentially boring. It's a great way to be productive while at the same time being absorbed in a book and let's be real, if you're reading this that is what you love most. But the enjoyment of an audiobook often depends as much on the performance of the narrator as the actual story. Five Stephen Fry is just great, I really enjoyed his performance of the first Sherlock Holmes book, A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He narrates Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive collection, which is 72 hours … [Read more...]
Book Haul: Second Hand
A couple of weeks ago, I went to a huge second hand store and I was so lucky. I've always loved watching the TV adaptions of Miss Marple and Poirot. But I hadn't read any of Agatha Christie's book until I read At Bertram's Hotel two years ago. I liked it, but I was not so wowed that I just had to continue reading all of them at that time. Fast forward to the second hand store. They friggin' had three new Facsimile of first edition copies of Murder on the Orient Express, The ABC Murders and Then There Were None. The best thing though, was that they were only 2 dollars per book. Of course I bought all three, who in their right mind wouldn't. Murder on the Orient Express Synopsis from … [Read more...]
