FIVE Love triangles. Now this is one that can be done right, but is mostly done wrong. It's simply unrealistic, at least for most people. I can't recall ever reading about a love triangle with two girls fighting over a guy, but the other way around is so common in young adult. A series that does it right is Cassandra Clare's Infernal Devices. I'm team Will, but both Will and Jem are just so great. Tessa is lucky to have been loved by two such lovable characters. I loved reading about the three of them fighting demons and sharing a strong bond of friendship and love. I can only think of a few examples where I enjoyed reading about a love triangle, the rest fall … [Read more...]
Quinsey Wolfe’s Glass Vault by Candace Robinson
EDIT APRIL 30th 2018: This review is of an old version of the book. A new and revised version is being released in June 2018. *I received an arc of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.* DISCLAIMER: This is my own personal opinion based on my enjoyment of the book. Some of the problems I had with the writing style may have been resolved in the finished copy, so please note that my opinion was formed after reading an advance copy. ⭐⭐/5 stars. Quinsey Wolfe's Glass Vault is an impressive weaving of horror stories and fairytales set in a place of evil incarnate. It's filled with twists and turns, some you'll be able to spot if you're reading closely, and others … [Read more...]
Book Haul: OMG-I-Won-a-Giveaway Edition
I entered a giveaway Faber & Faber hosted on twitter, where the prize was the books they'd published that week, and for the first time in my life I actually won. I was so excited that I squealed. I didn't even know that was a thing that could happen to me until that moment. The first book I won was Ghachar Ghochar by Indian author Vivek Shanbhag and translated to English by Srinath Perur. The synopsis reads: ”When an impoverished but close-knit family undergoes an almost miraculous change in fortune, allegiances and desires realign, a marriage falls apart, and tensions build unstoppably towards a devastating conflict. In this transformative novel by the acclaimed Indian writer … [Read more...]
Books I Read in One Sitting
I'm very easily distracted. So, it takes a lot to capture my full attention long enough to finish a book in one sitting. These are the few that've managed to do just that in recent years. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. Read in April 2017. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars. The mystery of why Hannah Baker committed suicide kept me wanting to turn page after page. Read more of my thoughts in my review. The Dark Talent (Alcatraz #5) by Brandon Sanderson. Read in February 2017. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars. The final installment in Brandon Sanderson's Alcatraz vs. The Evil Librarians series is just as silly and filled with adventure as the rest. One of the best middle grade series out … [Read more...]
Currently Reading & What to read next?
Currently Reading I'm almost done with the audiobook book of The Rose Society by Marie Lu and oh my gods I'm so invested in all of the characters. The first book was enjoyable, but I didn't feel the need to continue the series right away. Then I saw the audiobook was available on Overdrive and went for it. I'm so glad I did, it's so much darker than the first one. Adelina really embraces her dark side and I love it. The second book I'm currently reading is And I Darken by Kiersten White. I only just started it and am about 50 pages into it at the moment. I'm already intrigued by the characters. I'm pretty sure I'll love it. Want to read next I've been really lucky the past month. I've … [Read more...]

April was a great month. I participated in Tome Topple and met some great bookish people on twitter. I tried to stay awake for Dewey's 24 hour readathon and failed. Top Five: Bookish Buzzwords
When looking for my next read, there are certain buzzwords that makes me instantly intrigued and excited. Here are my top five: FIVE Stories with a historical setting and occult or supernatural elements. The first book that comes to mind is The Diviners by Libba Bray. It's equal parts fun and scary. While solving a supernatural problem it also includes fashion and trends from 1920's New York, which I absolutely loved reading about. Another interesting book that fits is the second book in the All Souls Trilogy, Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness. It takes place in London in the year 1590, where we meet several historical figures while searching for a mysterious book. Dark Days … [Read more...]
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/ 5 stars “The circus arrives without warning.” The first sentence is bordering on iconic, it sets the mood instantly, raises your expectations and lets you know that you’re in for a treat. The Night Circus is written in present tense, set in the past and plays out over a span of 30 years. It took me a couple of chapters to get used to the writing, but I soon grew to love it. It fits the story because it creates a sense of urgency, which made me as a reader more engaged in the story. The characters were interesting, but I wanted to get to know them and I never felt I quite got there. The person I cared about most and felt closest to was Bailey. His journey of finding his … [Read more...]
13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/ 5 stars I read 13 Reasons Why in basically one sitting and I have mixed feelings about it. I personally really enjoyed it. I am myself no stranger to depression, but unlike Hannah Baker I was never bullied in school. I enjoyed the format and the mystery of how it got to the point where Hannah decided to end her life. The fact that Clay commented on Hannah's story was very enlightening, because you get to see how her decisions affected someone else as well as hearing how other people's actions affected Hannah and drove her over the edge. It also shows how people usually aren't able to look beyond their own problems and notice the struggles of people around them. Clay as well … [Read more...]
