The TBR book tag was created by Rachel from the A Perfection Called Books way back in 2014. I've been looking for a fun tag to do and I thought this one would be great, so here we are! How do you keep track of your TBR pile? I don't have a specific place for my unread books on my shelves. I've considered dividing them into read and unread, but I've been too lazy to actually take all of my books off of the shelves and organize them. I remember which books I've read, so it's not a problem for me to quickly pick an unread book off of my shelves anyway. I also really like reading on my kindle, so I have some tbr books there as well. Besides the ones that I own, there's my GoodReads tbr. … [Read more...]
The House Cup Reading Challenge: Update #1
We're a little over halfway through the house cup reading challenge, so I thought it was time to do an update of what I've read so far. As I always, I changed my tbr a bit. What a surprise. I'm very much a mood reader, so I'd say it was unavoidable that I'd switch it up instead of following what I planned to read. It has been a very productive readathon for me this far. I've already read 8 books. Most of them are really great, and a couple have even become new favorites. Main Challenges (20p) I've completed five out of seven main challenges, which are the ones that are worth most points. I feel very on top of schedule, even though I mixed up my tbr a bit as I've already … [Read more...]
T5W: Books Featuring Mythical Creatures
Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly thing hosted by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes. You can find more information about past and upcoming topics in the GoodReads group. I'm going to have to cheat a little bit, because I don't have enough books for just one creature. So instead, I'm sharing my top five books featuring mythical creatures in general. Before I bore you too much, let's get into the list. 5 — Storm Front by Jim Butcher The first book in the Dresden Files series is not the best book in the series according to most reviews I've come across. It is, none the less, a good supernatural crime mystery novel, which sets up the characters and the world that's expanded upon in the rest of the series. … [Read more...]
The House Cup Reading Challenge: Sign-up and TBR
I am easily pressured into things I want to do, so thanks Aurora for forcing me to partake in this readathon. The house cup reading challenge is happening from October 15th (Sunday) to November 12th (also a Sunday), there are a lot of rules and information that I don't feel like explaining, so instead here's a link to the readathon announcement post. I'm proud to say that I'm a Slytherin, ambitious, cunning and cool AF. Kidding, muhaha. T5W: Favorite Creepy Settings
Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly thing hosted by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes. You can find more information about past and upcoming topics in the GoodReads group. 5 — Babs Yagg's Store, Vassa in The Night by Sarah Porter Inspired by Russian folklore, namely Vasilisa The Beautiful and Baba Yaga, this strange and creepy book is great for fans of, well, strangeness and Russian folklore. The main character, Vassa, has a living doll who lives in her pocket, and the penalty for shoplifting at the local convenience store is beheading. It sounds weird, but it works. It's dark and whimsical at the same time. I liked it so much that I read the entire thing in one sitting, which I rarely do. 4 — The … [Read more...]
T5W: Books Featuring Witches
Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly thing hosted by Sam from ThoughtsOnTomes. This week's topic is, as the title indicates, books featuring witches. I had a hard time figuring out which books I wanted to include. After looking through GoodReads and my own shelves, I realized that I haven't read as many books with witches as I thought I had, and of the ones I did read, I only really liked a few of them. I've always been fascinated with magic, but, much to my dismay, I've mostly seen tv shows with witches in them rather than reading books about witches. I'll have to change that in the future. But until then, here are my top five books featuring witches. 5 — The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding by … [Read more...]
Space Readathon Wrap-Up: September 2017
The space readathon ended on Thursday the 21st of September. It was short, but I still managed to read a reasonable amount of pages. I didn't get to all of the books on my TBR, but I finished two of them and started a third. And guess what, I didn't even stray from my planned TBR. I feel like I deserve to be a little proud of myself. Before I start praising myself too much, here are the books I read during the space readathon. Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries by Neil deGrasse Tyson This one was certainly interesting as it dived deeper into the vastness of the cosmos than Astrophysics for People in a Hurry, which I finished right before starting Death by Black Hole. But for … [Read more...]
The Dollmaker of Krakow by R. M. Romero
The Dollmaker of Krakow took me completely by surprise. I was already hooked after the first few chapters. The story begins in The Land of the Dolls where Karolina is happily living her life as a seamstress until the day the rats invade. One day she is transported to our world by the kind wind and wakes up in The Dollmaker's shop in Krakow. The Dollmaker is a lonely WWI veteran, who struggles with the pain of losing his parents. But the appearance of Karolina in his life sets a series of fortunate events in motion. The fog he's been living in starts to lift as he meets a welcoming Jewish family of two, who makes him feel wanted and appreciated. The story follows The Dollmaker and Karolina's … [Read more...]
Space Readathon TBR: September 2017
I wasn't going to participate in a readathon for a while, but I just have to participate in this one BECAUSE SPACE. I need no other reason than that. This readathon is hosted by Sanne from the YouTube channel booksandquills. It starts today September 15th and ends on the 21st, and the official hashtag is #SpaceReadathon. As the name indicates it's all about reading books about space in one way or another. I'm very excited to dive in, since I've been in the biggest sci-fi mood of my life the past couple of weeks. I'm completely obsessed with space, so this readathon is my favorite (earthly) event of the month. As always I present to you a TBR that may change during the course of the … [Read more...]
Nyxia by Scott Reintgen
Nyxia is the most racially diverse book I've ever read and it does it so well. The diversity creates an understanding of different cultures while also showing that we're all the same no matter color or culture. The story follows Emmett, an African-American teenager from Detroit. He wants to free himself and his family from the harsh reality of poverty. Along with nine other kids his age, he is selected by The Babel Corporation to board a lightship bound for an earth-like planet called Eden with the hope of returning home with the economical means to support his family. But in the search for a better life does freedom actually exist and who controls it? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars. Comes out … [Read more...]
