I celebrated my birthday on August 12th, and what is a birthday celebration without books I ask you. Nothing is the answer, it leads to a dull and uneventful existence. Kidding aside. For my birthday this year I got some books from my lovely parents, and I bought myself some. The title of this post is pretty self-explanatory, but words are nice to write down, so that's what I do. The reason I'm doing this haul so long after my birthday is because the majority of the books didn't arrive until the 25th. I was pissed they didn't arrive sooner, since the order was made with plenty of time for shipping. Now I'm just happy they're here for me to finally enjoy. First up I received both The … [Read more...]

Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller
Mask of Shadows is the story about a genderfluid main character, Sal, who enters an audition to become part of the Queen's Left Hand. The Left Hand is a team of assassins whose identities are secret. Going in, I was excited to read a new fantasy with a diverse main character. But it just did not live up to my expectations. ⭐️⭐️/5 stars. Comes out August 29th. I wanted it to blow my mind, but it's nothing new or groundbreaking. To me, it is a very average young adult fantasy. The fact that it follows a genderfluid thief is what drew me in, but Sal is boring and unlikeable. Sometimes unlikeable characters are great, but in this case because of the utter lack of character development … [Read more...]
Reading Update: Audiobooks and The Inability to Concentrate
The past week or so I've had trouble concentrating on writing blog post and reviews. I've even had trouble sitting down to read or watch TV. Instead, to distract myself from stressing out, I've been listening to audiobooks while cleaning, pacing and just moving around. I've basically been doing anything but relax. Life is shitty sometimes for no reason and it's making me very anxious. Even this short update is making me want to smash something in frustration for not being able to sit down and be eloquent in expressing my frustration with myself. What a sentence. So, I'm writing this update as a reminder that it's okay to miss a day of blogging. It's okay to space out for a while. But, it's … [Read more...]
Tome Topple Round 4 (August 2017) Wrap-Up
On Friday the 4th, the first day of Tome Topple, I read the last 200 pages of A Court of Thorns and Roses. Initially, I thought I'd be able to finish it before the reaction started, but alas, I had to spend my first day reading a book that didn't count towards my goals for Tome Topple. Just like I did during BookTube-A-Thon. On the second day I picked up my first actual book for Tome Topple. A couple of days into reading my first tome, I realized how utterly unrealistic my TBR was. How could I possible think I'd be able to read a total of 3,948 pages in just TWO WEEKS. Sometimes I wonder what goes through my mind at certain times. And I have come to the conclusion that my mind works in … [Read more...]
Zero Repeat Forever by Gabrielle Prendergast
Zero Repeat Forever is the first book in The Nahx Invasions series. The novel follows a girl called Raven. As a result of a rebellious streak, she lands herself in a summer camp in the Canadian wilderness along with her boyfriend, his twin, and a couple of other teens. Along side Raven, we also follow Eight who's a 'Nahx', a soldier who's part of the invasion. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars. Comes out August 29th. Zero Repeat Forever is action-packed and the plot is engaging. It's a slow burn, and it took me a good while to read because of the density at times. The first 150 pages or so were rough to get through. The writing style threw me off, but it either became more complex after the … [Read more...]
A to Z Bookish Survey
Today I'm doing the A to Z Bookish Survey created by Jamie from perpetualpageturner.com. I decided to do this because I wanted to do something fun, as I'm currently a bit behind on writing reviews. What better way to get ahead than do something other than the stuff you ought to do, right? A — Author you've read the most books from Definitely Charlaine Harris. I've read all of the Sookie Stackhouse books, the Midnight, Texas series, the Harper Connelly series, and a couple of the Aurora Teagarden books. That comes to a total of 26 books and I plan on reading everything she comes out with. Also, if you didn't know Midnight, Texas is now a TV show on NBC. B — Best sequel ever The … [Read more...]
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
A Court of Thorns and Roses is the first book in an extremely popular high fantasy new adult series. It follows a human girl called Feyre, who while hunting to provide for her father and sisters, comes across a wolf that she kills. It turns out the wolf was actually a faerie and as you can imagine drama ensues. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars. The pace of the book is rather slow, not a lot happens in the first three quarters of the book. Though I still liked reading even the slow parts, which is, as I just said, the majority of the book. Most of the time the worldbuilding and descriptions flowed smoothly, but there were a couple of times where I was thrown out of the story because I had to roll my eyes … [Read more...]
The Glittering Court by Richelle Mead
The Glittering Court is the first instalment in a trilogy of companion novels. In each book we follow the story from the perspective of each girl individually. The first book follows Adelaide, the second follows Mira and the third and last book follows Tamsin. At the time of writing the first two books are out, while the conclusion to the trilogy has yet to have a release date. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars. To be honest, I had a hard time deciding what to rate this book. The reason is that I enjoyed it immensely, even though the pacing is weird. It's both very fast and slow at the same time, which I believe is because it's a long and expansive story crammed into 400 pages. Some parts are great and I … [Read more...]
Tome Topple TBR (August 2017)
Tome Topple is an amazing readathon hosted by Sam from ThoughtsOnTomes over on youtube. It's all about reading those long books that just sits there on the shelf, staring, wanting to be read, but who never gets picked because of their daunting size. So basically, the only rules are that you can only read novels or graphic novels over 500 pages. Anthologies are not allowed, as they generally aren't as intimidating because the whole 500+ pages isn't one single story. This round runs from August 4th to August 17th. And for the first time ever there are instagram challenges in addition to the usual reading challenges. 1. Read more than 1 tome 2. Read a graphic novel (still over 500 … [Read more...]
